Director note
The garment is a held shape and the body is the armature. Find the one angle at which the volume reads and give the figure more air than feels comfortable; the negative space is part of the garment. Keep the pose still and the arms clear of the silhouette. Never use a wind machine, and never let the shape depend on movement: if it does not hold when the model stops, it is not sculptural.

About this brief
How do I photograph the Sculptural Couture aesthetic?

Photograph the shape, not the dress: one angle where the volume reads, one light that lets a fold make its own shadow.

Director's note

What shots should I get for a Sculptural Couture photo shoot?

Leave with every frame on this list.

Shot list

  1. Full-length front-on shot of a figure in a bonded-wool coat built from four curved panels, the hem standing away from the legs by a hand's width, plain pale floor and wall, the space around the silhouette left empty
  2. Three-quarter shot of a silk gazar dress whose collar rises into a single held curve behind the head, one soft key from the side so the curve casts a shadow on the shoulder
  3. Close construction detail of a bonded seam where two curved panels meet, the horsehair interlining just visible at the opening, raking light across the join
  4. Close textile detail of crisp organza doubled and pressed into a standing fold, backlit so the two layers read as separate
  5. Wide campaign scene of one figure in a structured satin gown in an empty gallery with a polished floor and a high window, the figure small in the frame and the volume still legible
What lighting works for Sculptural Couture photography?

One large soft key and a black flag on the shadow side. The fold has to make its own shadow, so no fill on the dark side and no second source. Daylight through a north window is the reference.

Light

Where should I shoot Sculptural Couture photography?

Scout these before anything else.

Locations

  1. A plain studio cove with a pale floor
  2. An empty gallery with a polished concrete floor
  3. A stone stair with a high window
  4. A white room with nothing in it but the light
What wardrobe works for Sculptural Couture photography?

One garment per frame, in bone, ivory or black, with a single saturated accent at most across the set. Silk gazar, bonded wool, structured duchesse satin and crisp organza. No jewellery, no belt, no layering that softens the outline.
