History
1880s–present · American East Coast beach houses and seaside living
Holiday houses along the American East Coast, such as the shingle-style cottages of New England and the Hamptons from the late nineteenth century, set the template: weathered timber outside, simple bright rooms inside and porches facing the water.
Through the twentieth century the beach house became a symbol of relaxed wealth and summer leisure, furnished with slipcovered sofas that could handle sand, wicker, and blue and white stripes.
Films such as Nancy Meyers's Something's Gotta Give, from 2003, made the airy, white, linen-filled beach house an aspirational interior, and in 2022 the coastal grandmother trend on social media revived the look for a new generation.
