History
2010s–present · American rural vernacular, popularised by home renovation television
American farmhouses were built for work: simple timber houses with big kitchens, porches and plain, durable finishes. The furniture was practical, often handmade, and influenced by traditions such as the Shakers, who prized simplicity and usefulness.
In the 2010s the look was repackaged as modern farmhouse. Joanna and Chip Gaines's renovation series Fixer Upper, which aired from 2013 to 2018, made white shiplap, black metal fixtures, open shelving and barn doors familiar to millions, and their Magnolia Market in Waco, Texas, became a destination.
The style spread through new-build suburbs, home stores and wedding venues until it became one of the most common American interiors of the decade. Designers now tend to use it in lighter touches, mixing it with other styles.
