Where Dopamine Decor came from, what makes it recognisable, and the fingerprint it leaves.
History
2020s–present · Pop design, Memphis and the post-lockdown colour boom
Joyful, saturated rooms have a long pop lineage. In 1970 the Danish designer Verner Panton built Visiona 2, a room-sized landscape of colour and curves, and in 1981 the Memphis Group, led by Ettore Sottsass, launched in Milan with furniture in clashing colours and patterns.
In the 2010s designers such as India Mahdavi brought bright colour back to high-end interiors; her all-pink gallery at Sketch in London, from 2014, became one of the most photographed rooms in the world.
After the pandemic lockdowns of 2020 and 2021, people who had spent months at home embraced colour to lift their mood. Around 2022 the name dopamine decor, borrowed from dopamine dressing in fashion, spread on social media for rooms built to make their owners happy.
