The Risograph duplicator was introduced by Riso Kagaku Corporation in 1986 as a high-speed office printer for schools, churches and small businesses. It works like a digital screen printer: a thermal head burns a stencil for each ink colour, and soy-based ink is pushed through the stencil onto paper at speeds approaching 150 pages per minute. Each colour requires a separate pass through the machine, and the paper shifts slightly between passes, producing the characteristic misregistration that would be a defect in commercial printing.
Artists and independent publishers discovered the machine in the 2010s and turned those defects into a visual language. The limited spot-colour palette, typically two or three inks per print, forces compositional decisions that a full-colour process never requires. The halftone grain is coarser than offset lithography. The soy ink sits on the paper surface rather than soaking in, giving prints a tactile, slightly raised quality. And the overlap of two transparent inks creates an accidental third colour that the artist can predict but not fully control.
Risograph printing now anchors a global network of small-press publishers, zine makers and poster artists. Studios like Hato Press in London, Knust Press in Nijmegen and Perfectly Acceptable in Portland run Riso machines as community print infrastructure. The aesthetic has migrated into digital design, where designers simulate the grain, misregistration and spot-colour palette in Photoshop and Illustrator, though the simulations lack the tactile unpredictability of the real thing.

The machine's constraints force an economy of means that most designers find liberating after years of unlimited-colour digital work. Two inks and a sheet of recycled paper is the whole toolkit.
The digital simulation of Riso aesthetics is now more common than actual Riso printing, which creates a tension the community is aware of. A Photoshop grain overlay and a shifted layer do not carry the same meaning as a print where the misregistration happened because the paper shifted in the drum.
