Beads have carried meaning far longer than they have carried words, but the trade that made bead lettering possible is a Parisian one. In 1924 the Lesage family took over the workshop of the embroiderer Michonet, founded in 1858 and a supplier to Worth and to the court of Napoleon III. Through the 1930s the house embroidered for Madeleine Vionnet and for Elsa Schiaparelli, whose surrealist collections needed beadwork that could describe an object rather than decorate a hem. A single Lesage panel could take hundreds of hours, and that arithmetic is still the argument the style makes.
Elsewhere beads were used to write. Haitian drapo Vodou are flags sewn with sequins and beads and devoted to a particular lwa, carrying the spirit's veve and often its name in lettering worked bead by bead; sequins became common on them from the 1940s, and artists such as Myrlande Constant have kept the form moving since. Beadwork of this kind is not ornament applied to a message. The beads are the message, and the time they took is part of what is being said.
The contemporary style is small, graphic and photographic. A word is drawn as a line, chrome or steel micro-beads are laid along it and glued to coloured card, and the result is photographed under a hard raking source so every bead earns a specular highlight and a shadow. It reached design partly through the gallery, where Liza Lou's Kitchen, built from glass beads between 1991 and 1996, made beadwork legible as serious work, and partly through the macro lens, because a sphere a millimetre wide only reads as an object when something is close enough to show the light on it.

Make it, then photograph it. Draw the letterform first and lay beads along that line, or the spacing wanders and the word reads as a mistake rather than a discipline. Keep it to one or two words: a beaded paragraph is a week of work nobody will read. Light it hard from the side so each bead earns a highlight and a shadow. A bevel filter over digital type is the one thing this style cannot survive, because the entire point is that somebody sat down and did it.
Right when the brand is selling craft and has to prove it: jewellery, fashion, perfume, small-run editions and covers. It rewards short words, real beads and hard side light, and fails as a filter.

Bead lettering is an argument about labour, and it is made in a moment when labour is the one thing an image cannot fake cheaply. A word that took a day to lay reads as a day's work at any size above a thumbnail, which is why jewellery, fashion and perfume reach for it: craft is the justification for a price, and this is craft that photographs.
Its failure mode is the bevel. Digital type with a chrome gradient and a drop shadow is the exact thing the style is defined against, and it is recognisable instantly. What separates the real thing is physics: a bead is a sphere, so it carries one small bright highlight and casts one directional shadow, and both of them move when the light does.

A style in which words are spelled out with tiny beads, usually chrome or steel micro-beads, glass seed beads or pearls, laid one at a time along a drawn letterform and fixed to card, paper or cloth. The type sits proud of the surface, catches light and throws a shadow, and is then photographed close up.
From two directions. Couture embroidery, where houses such as Lesage have beaded for Vionnet, Schiaparelli and Chanel since 1924, and bead traditions that use beads to write rather than to decorate, such as the Haitian drapo Vodou lettered with the name of a lwa. The contemporary graphic form is recent, and owes as much to macro photography as to either.
Draw the letterform first and lay the beads along that line so the spacing does not wander. Keep it to one or two words, because the labour scales directly with the character count. Then light it hard from one side and low, with the fill off, so each bead has a highlight and a shadow. Photograph the object rather than rendering it.
Embroidery draws with thread and can fill a shape; bead lettering builds a letter out of discrete spheres, so it is always a line rather than an area. Thread and tape joins fragments of an image together and shows the seams; bead lettering makes one word into an object and leaves the rest of the page empty.
